December 13, 2021, (College Park, M.D.) - Al-Huda School teachers recently received training in curriculum development as they embark upon a new ambitious effort to revamp the school’s curriculums across all subjects.
The training was conducted by world-renowned speaker and education consultant Jay McTighe, who is also the creator of the Understanding by Design® (UbD™) curriculum framework. The training focused on developing purposeful lesson plans that drive student understanding and application of knowledge. This is one of several workshops in the past year conducted by McTighe for Al-Huda School teachers.
The workshops feature a balance of presentations, small group activities and discussions, design time in role-alike groups, a review of web-based resources, and a sharing/feedback protocol. "The session was an effective instruction and summation of the UbD framework," says veteran teacher of AP English and Government, Zaynab Abdullah. "It gave the Al-Huda staff another opportunity to consider how UbD in its design, supports, reinforces, and compliments our own, Al-Huda, institutional 'Know…Grow…Show…Glow' goals. InshaAllah."
The venture to develop a curriculum around the core aim of student understanding and application was pioneered by the Islamic Studies curriculum team of Al-Huda School. This workshop comes at the heels of the official launch of a bold initiative to bring authentic Islamic education to the youth with its new Islamic Studies curriculum.
The long-term goal is to implement the Understand by Design framework across all subjects–as part of a broader goal of making content relevant, useful, and applicable for students throughout their life. Find out more about Al-Huda School at www.alhudaschoolmd.org.
