Homeschooling Supervision Program

“And say, ‘My Lord, increase me in knowledge."

Thank you for your interest in Al-Huda School’s Homeschooling Supervision Program. We are honored to accompany your family on this meaningful journey—one that nurtures both academic excellence and a faith-centered education. Through MSDE-approved oversight, spiritual guidance, and structured support, Al-Huda School is committed to empowering homeschool families with a program deeply rooted in Islamic values.
★ Recognized by the State of Maryland
Al-Huda School is a registered nonpublic school approved by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) to supervise home instruction programs. This means we are qualified to serve as an umbrella program for homeschool families who prefer supervision outside of the local school system.
You can find our listing in the official MSDE directory of approved homeschool umbrella programs here
✦ Getting Started with Al-Huda Supervision
Once your enrollment is confirmed, you will be contacted to schedule an initial orientation meeting (within four weeks). During this session, we will provide:
› An overview of Al-Huda’s homeschool supervision process
› Your responsibilities as a homeschooling parent under Maryland law
› Guidance on required documentation and progress reviews
➭ Required Reviews
In compliance with MSDE regulations, families under our supervision must participate in two academic progress reviews each year:
• Mid-Year Review (between December and February)
• End-of-Year Review (between June and August, In Shaa Allah)
We will contact you in advance to schedule your appointments. Please be mindful of deadlines and respond promptly to avoid delays in certification.
⬛ Preparing for Review Meetings
At each review, parents must provide a portfolio that demonstrates regular, thorough instruction across all required subjects. Please bring:
• Samples of student work from all subjects (e.g., writing, worksheets, projects)
• Reading materials, tests, or activity logs
• A completed report card or progress summary
If materials are incomplete or insufficient, a follow-up meeting may be scheduled before certification is issued.
↻ Annual Re-Registration
To continue in the program, families must:
• Re-register with Al-Huda School each school year
• Notify their local homeschool office annually that they are homeschooling under Al-Huda’s supervision
We strongly encourage families to complete both steps early to ensure smooth continuity and compliance.
✎ Overview of Maryland Homeschool Law
Under Maryland law, homeschooling is a legal educational option for children ages 5 to 18. Families must:
• Submit a Notice of Consent form to their local superintendent at least 15 calendar days before beginning home instruction
• Verify continuation of the program annually
• Choose a supervision method—either through portfolio review by the local school system or approval under a recognized umbrella entity such as Al-Huda School
Families supervised by Al-Huda are exempt from public school portfolio reviews, as we handle oversight and ensure all state requirements are met. If a family fails to provide adequate evidence of instruction during the review, the local superintendent may issue a notice of deficiency. Parents then have 30 days to correct the issue. If no improvement is made, the student must be enrolled in a public or nonpublic school.
♛ Diploma & GED Options for Homeschoolers
Please note that students completing their education through a homeschool program are not eligible to receive a Maryland public high school diploma.
Alternative options include:
• Transferring to a public school and fulfilling their graduation requirements
• Earning a diploma through a nonpublic or church-exempt school
• Taking the GED exam (available to students aged 16 and older who are enrolled in or have completed a home instruction program)
‼️ Disclaimer: Please ensure that high school credits are completed according to the
requirements of your specific county or state.‼️

Selecting the right curriculum is key to providing a comprehensive and engaging education. Here are some recommended programs, including popular online schools and our own Al-Huda School curriculum:
- Calvert Homeschool — A well-established, flexible homeschooling program offering print and online materials across all grade levels. Known for strong academics and parent support.
- K12 — A tuition-free online public school option available in many states, providing structured courses with certified teachers and interactive lessons.
- Acellus Academy — An online curriculum with self-paced video lessons, assessments, and credit recovery, suitable for various learning styles.

We encourage families to choose curricula that best fit their child’s learning style and educational goals, supplementing core subjects with materials that align with your values.
✧ Standardized Assessments for Homeschool Students
Standardized testing can offer helpful insights into your child’s academic growth and readiness in key subject areas. While not required for homeschooling in Maryland, many families choose to incorporate assessments into their year for benchmarking and future planning.
◉ MAP Testing at Al-Huda School
Al-Huda School offers MAP (Measurement of Academic Progress) testing to our homeschooling students twice per year. MAP is a nationally recognized, adaptive assessment that measures student performance in reading, math, and language usage.
All registered homeschoolers will receive an email near the MAP testing date to sign up for their child.
